A lot of windows users don't know about the windows Registry. The windows registry is where windows applications store a lot of information that is loaded when they are executed. This includes, the appearance of windows, user information, and misc. data. Trial programs often use the registry to check if a user is registered or if the trial time has run out. Windows also uses the registry to store appearance and security information. This prank will show you how security programs limit the capabilities of a user and show you how to disable the windows desktop.
First to explore the registry you need a program called Regedit which comes with winblows. To start it, goto run, and just type in regedit. When you start the program you will see two areas. The left side you see the registry keys. Today the key we will be using will all be under the HKEY_CURRENT_USER Hkey. The area on the right will display the values of the key selected. Exploring the registry is a lot like using windows explorer. The locations of each key is displayed similarly to directory paths. To create a new value, right click under the correct key and click create new string value, binary value or DWORD value.
To begin run regedit and goto the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\. Now lets have some fun. Create a DWORD value called 'NoDesktop' under the current key. After creating the value right click the value and click Modify. Set the value data to 00000001. This disables desktop icons. Who needs a desktop anyways right? This is just some of the many things you can do with the registry.
